Obituary

Thomas Marvin Dukes, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, at Life Path Hospice. He was 85 years old.

A native Floridian, Marvin was born in Brooker but lived in both Lake Butler and Lake City during his youth. He was the youngest of nine children begotten to William M. Dukes and Bessie Thomas Dukes. He was raised in a close-knit family that shaped his values of hard work, faith, and devotion to others.

Prior to graduation from Columbia High School Class of 1957, Marvin began a life of public service, which included enlistment in the Florida National Guard, followed by service in the Army Reserves. Marvin had a distinguished career with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for the State of Florida where he demonstrated a quiet integrity and a continued commitment to service. After 45 years, Marvin retired as the Chief of North Florida Field Operations in the Division of Driver Licenses.

Those who knew Marvin will remember his incredible handyman skills and his generous spirit in sharing those talents. He also found joy and peace in fishing, where many memories were made with loved ones and best friends - be it a single day of fishing or the annual fishing camp vacations.

He was married to the love of his life, Linda Murphy Dukes, for over 50 years. Their marriage was a strong and enduring partnership until Linda’s passing, and Marvin carried her memory with him always.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Kathy Dukes Hansen, and her husband, John Hansen, of Tampa. He was a proud grandfather to Tyler Viens, Jake Hansen, Haley Hansen, and Joshua Hansen. His family was fortunate to be guided by his strength during their childhood and will continue benefiting from his influence well into adulthood. The blessings of his legacy will carry on for generations.

Marvin was a longtime member of the Glen Springs Road Church of Christ, where he grew in faith and community. While we deeply mourn Marvin’s passing, we are comforted by the promise of God. We do not grieve as those without hope, for we know that through our faith in the Lord, we will one day be reunited with him in heaven. (1 Thessalonians 4:13)

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 3, at 2:00 PM at the Senior Center located at 5701 NW 34th Boulevard, Gainesville, FL 32653. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate Marvin’s life.
