IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard Cairns
Whalen
November 17, 1944 – April 27, 2025
Richard Cairns Whalen passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 27, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 17, 1944, in Niagara Falls, New York, Richard was the beloved son of the late Mary Stanley Dalgleish and Thomas Patrick Whalen.
Richard lived a rich and adventurous life that took him across the globe, with chapters in Montreal, Canada; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Baghdad, Iraq. A man of both dedication and creativity, Richard served proudly as a merchant marine and devoted five decades of his professional life to Modern Woodmen Insurance, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and clients alike.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard was a passionate and gifted artist. His studio at Art Lofts Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida was a space of inspiration and reflection, where he brought his love of watercolor painting to life.
He was a devoted husband to Carol Sealey, his loving partner through life's journey. Richard was a proud and supportive father to Marc and his wife Christa, Chris, and Deborah, and a cherished grandfather to Madison, Ryan, Kristen, Christian, and Nick. He also found immense joy in being a great-grandfather to Manny.
He is survived by his sister, Michele Cerrone, and has several dear nieces and nephews with Andrew, Erin, Nick, Sarah, and Suzanne, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Richard's legacy is one of humor, artistic spirit, and enduring love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private celebration of his life will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The American Cancer Society or a local arts studio in his name.
