Martiniano Velasco Sumano, beloved father, husband, brother, and friend, passed away on October 14, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on July 5, 1952, in San Pablo Huixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, he was the son of Malaquias Velasco and Estefana Sumano.
Raised in the vibrant culture of Oaxaca, Martiniano proudly served in the Mexican army for six years, a testament to his dedication and commitment. In 1987, he married Laura Adania in Portland, Oregon, where they built a loving family.
For over twenty years, Martiniano worked at Portland Parks and Recreation as a seasonal maintenance worker and park technician. His coworkers admired his unwavering work ethic, sense of humor, and caring nature. Known for his remarkable ability to nurture plants and trees, he brought beauty to the parks he tended, earning the trust and respect of his supervisors, who granted him complete autonomy in his work. Martiniano's humility and kindness were evident in everything he did, and his genuine spirit brought joy to all who knew him.
A devoted Catholic, Martiniano found strength and guidance in his faith. He was deeply loved by his daughters, Lily and Marissa Velasco-Adania, and is survived by his three brothers, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large extended family spanning Portland, California, and Mexico. He also cherished the companionship of his partner, Carol Bentley. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.
Martiniano will be remembered for his laughter, his tireless dedication to his family and work, and his warm-hearted nature that touched many lives. A service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 1 PM at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with a burial at Lone Fir Cemetery at 3 PM. Martiniano Velasco Sumano, querido padre, esposo, hermano y amigo, falleció el 14 de Octubre de 2024, a la edad de 72 años. Nacido el 5 de julio de 1952, en San Pablo Huixtepec, Oaxaca, México, era hijo de Malaquias Velasco y Estefana Sumano.
Criado en la vibrante cultura de Oaxaca, Martiniano sirvió con orgullo en el ejército mexicano durante seis años, un testimonio de su dedicación y compromiso. En 1987, se casó con Laura Adania en Portland, Oregon, donde formaron una familia amorosa.
Durante más de veinte años, Martiniano trabajaba en Portland Parks and Recreation como trabajador de mantenimiento y técnico de parques. Sus compañeros de trabajo admiraban su inquebrantable ética de trabajo, su sentido del humor y su naturaleza solidaria. Conocido por su notable capacidad para cuidar plantas y árboles, trajo belleza a los parques que cuidaba, ganándose la confianza y el respeto de sus supervisores, quienes le otorgaron total autonomía en su trabajo. En total tenia 4 hermanos y 2 hermanas. Le sobreviven numerosas sobrinas, sobrinos, primos, primas y una gran familia extendida que abarca Portland, California y México. También apreciaba la compañía de su pareja, Carol Bentley.
Martiniano será recordado por su risa, su dedicación a su familia y su trabajo, y su naturaleza afectuosa que tocó a muchas vidas. Se llevará a cabo un servicio para celebrar su vida el viernes 25 de octubre 2024 a la 1:00 p.m en la iglesia católica St. Joseph the Worker, con un entierro en el cementerio Lone Fir a las 3:00 p. m.
