Obituary

Wednesday, July 16 2025 in Cooperstown, NY, surrounded by members of his loving

family, Mark Schwartz entered into eternity under escort of the angels of Hashem.

Mark Schwartz was born on August 12,1946 in Syracuse, NY, his beloved hometown.

Mark was the 4th of 5 children of Joseph and Edna Schwartz, both of blessed memory. He was

predeceased by his eldest sister, Linda Dresher (Donald), of blessed memory, and eldest

brother Bruce Schwartz (Marion), of blessed memory. He is survived by his big sister Rosalind

Schwartz (Stephen), and little brother Robert Schwartz (Susan).

Mark grew up in Syracuse, NY and graduated from Nottingham High school in 1964. He

was a lifelong fan of Syracuse University athletics, particularly basketball and football, holding

season tickets for the latter for decades. One of his favorite pastimes was attending games at

the Carrier Dome with his sons, friends, and extended family. Mark was an avid golfer and was

a member of Pine Brook country club for many years. He also had a lifelong love for Major

League Baseball and eventually settled on a favorite team, the New York Mets. Mark’s many

other interests included indulging his taste buds, traveling, and vacationing with his family.

A gifted salesman, Mark worked as a sales rep for several furniture importers,

distributors, as well as bedding manufacturers over the course of his long and distinguished

career. He would routinely spend long hours on the road traveling all over upstate NY and

beyond, supporting his beloved family.

Mark welcomed his first child, Matthew Jon Schwartz, on July 19, 1969, a product of his

first marriage to Gail Ochsenbein of Oswego, NY. After marrying Gail, Mark made the decision

to adopt Gail’s daughter, Gretchen Ann Hibbert. Mark and Gail eventually split for mutual

benefit. Shortly thereafter, Mark met the woman that would turn out to be the great love of his

life, Bonnie Vivian Schwartz (Roe). Mark and Bonnie met in the early 70’s in Fulton County, NY.

After a period of courtship, the two were married on April 27th, 1975 at Knesseth Israel

Synagogue, and settled in Gloversville, NY. In addition to welcoming into his family Bonnie’s 2

children from a previous marriage, Stephanie Lynn Jebode (England) and James Donald

England, the couple welcomed their first child together, Zachary Aaron Schwartz, on February

24th 1978, followed by another son, Nathaniel Adam Schwartz on December 17th 1986.

The pair remained married until Mark’s untimely passing, sharing many happy years

together. Above all, Mark passed down his love for his family and his Jewish heritage to his

many children and grandchildren, who proudly continue his legacy.

Mark is survived by his wife Bonnie, his sons Matthew Schwartz, Zachary Schwartz

(Sarah), and Nathaniel Schwartz, his step daughter Stephanie Jebode (Hank), stepson James

England (Tina) and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The Schwartz family will hold funeral services at Knesseth Israel Synagogue on Monday
