IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Luz A.
Avila De Hernandez
September 3, 1932 – May 16, 2025
Born in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico - Passed on May 16, 2025Most recently of Amsterdam, NY; formerly of Stony Point, NY
Luz Hernandez, a woman of strength, grace, and unwavering love, passed away on May 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy stitched with resilience, laughter, and care.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Luz carried her roots with pride & determination as she made her way to New York, eventually settling in Stony Point where she spent the majority of her life. Most recently, she resided in Amsterdam, New York, surrounded by family.
Luz was the proud and devoted mother of six children: Nancy (Omar), Joseph (Xiomara), Manuel (Helene), Miguel (Mayra), O'Neill, and Dennis. She was also a cherished grandmother to Omar II, Jamie, Jasmine, Jessica, Veronica, and Tiffany, and a great-grandmother to Ty Manuel Hanson. She raised her family with bold love and boundless spirit—traits she embodied every day.
A gifted seamstress, Luz poured her artistry into every piece she made. Her hands created beauty and memory, crafting dresses that adorned brides on their most special day. Her love for sewing extended beyond her work, it was a part of how she connected with those around her.
She lovingly shared her craft with her grandchildren, but one in particular was gifted with her same creative talents: her youngest granddaughter, Tiffany Hernandez. Luz encouraged Tiffany's early designs, nurtured her curiosity, and inspired her imagination. Tiffany fondly remembers afternoons spent exploring her grandmother's fabric collection and bringing home treasured scraps that held stories of their own. These quiet, shared moments—and the love passed down in the form of fabrics and patterns—live on as a powerful part of Luz's legacy
Those who knew Luz remember her as outspoken, intelligent, and funny, with a kindness that touched everyone she met. Her generosity, strength, and authenticity made her unforgettable.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched with her warmth, wit, and timeless talent.
