LeGrand M. (Lee) Thompson, age 94, went home to be with the Lord just after midnight on Friday, October 11, 2024. He was at Lakewood Post-Acute and Rehabilitation, Lakewood, CO, after an illness and hospitalization when the Lord called him home. He had been living close to daughter Joanne and her husband Bill at Eaton Senior Communities in Lakewood prior to his hospitalization.
Mr. Thompson was born in Medford, Massachusetts, on July 6, 1930, to George and Alice Thompson. He had a 21-year career in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He had several duty stations outside of the U.S. These included Thule, Greenland, Korea, Germany, and Italy. After his retirement from the Army in 1969, he worked for a time at Hallicrafters, and then at Gilbert X-Ray Company in El Paso, Texas, from which he retired.
He married Erika Stein Thompson on December 17, 1952. Over the years they enjoyed fishing, camping, and fellowship with friends. After retiring from Gilbert X-Ray, they moved to their favorite vacation spot in Questa, New Mexico, where they lived for many years. While in Questa, they attended Questa First Baptist Church. Lee was led to the Lord in Questa by Pastor Dale Buchman. The Thompsons were both baptized at Questa First Baptist on the same day. Erika Thompson preceded her husband to Heaven on September 26, 2011. Lee continued to live in Questa (along with a dog, Penny, adopted in 2012) until he moved to Colorado in 2020.
In Colorado, he attended First Baptist Church of Englewood, where he was active in Jolly 60s. He enjoyed meals and fellowship as a part of the Ole Fogeys group. He dearly loved to share his Army stories, to the delight of many. He was also a regular at the Volunteers of America lunch program at Clements Community Center in Lakewood. His lively storytelling brought much joy to others and will be greatly missed.
After the loss of Penny, he adopted another dog, Rocky, in 2021. Rocky is the dog in the picture.
As his health began to decline, Lee received assistance at home by a caring, professional staff from A Place at Home home care. When he passed, his arrangements were from All Veterans Funeral and Cremation. Cremation has taken place. His 11am service on 11/5/24 at First Baptist Church of Englewood will be followed by a committal service at Ft. Logan Cemetery with military honors. The Ft. Logan service will be with the interment of both Lee and Erika Thompson together.
“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
