Joseph Melvin Bunce

December 12, 1952 — November 24, 2025

"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make." - The Beatles.

Joseph Bunce, of Minneapolis, passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 72. Born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, he spent his early years in Calumet, where he developed the quiet humor, curiosity, and gentle strength that shaped his life. Later, he lived in Hopkins and other parts of the Twin Cities, finding joy in community, books, and supporting those around him.

A lover of books, movies, music, hot sauce, corny jokes, and perfectly timed puns, he brought warmth and laughter into everyday life. He studied journalism at Metropolitan Junior College and carried that love of words throughout his career. He worked as a proofreader at Merrill Corporation and later as a Writer and Coordinator at Asian Media Access, where his clarity, patience, and dedication helped elevate the work of others.

He was a longtime member of CTUL, the worker-led organization fighting for the rights of low-wage workers. He believed deeply in the dignity of all people and lent his energy and compassion to supporting communities in need. He was also a longtime member of Lyndale United Church of Christ in Minneapolis, where he found friendships, purpose, and a place to channel his compassion into action.

Those who knew him will remember his gentle, steady presence — always kind, thoughtful, and quietly powerful. He helped and cared for others without calling attention to it, leaving a lasting impression long after conversations ended. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Jelatis; two nephews; two nieces; two grandnieces; one grandnephew; and many friends, colleagues, and community members who were touched by his warmth and his belief in leaving the world a little better than he found it. A celebration of Joseph’s life will be held in the spring; all who knew Joseph are welcome to attend. Service details to follow.
