He was determined!
**Obituary for John Holmes Dager** It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of John Holmes Dager, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us on August 4, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on May 29, 1929, in Lynn, Massachusetts, John lived a life filled with determination, creativity, and an unwavering sense of humor. John’s educational journey began in Swampscott, Massachusetts, where he graduated from high school, trying his hand at trombone and football but ultimately finding joy in scooping ice cream. He furthered his studies at the Wentworth Institute in Boston, securing an Associate degree in Drafting while earning his way through college by working as a fry cook and drugstore ice cream scooper—skills that were undoubtedly as delectable as they sound! His life took a turning point when he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Serving as a mapping specialist, John brought the same dedication and creativity he exhibited throughout his life into his military career. After he settled in Schenectady, New York, John continued to shine professionally as a draftsman at GE, ultimately becoming a supervisor. Known for his leadership and ability to connect with his team, he even took the time to learn sign language to better communicate with a deaf colleague. Retiring at the age of 55, John embraced his newfound freedom, spending countless hours in his beloved basement workshop, tinkering with items and creating beautiful pieces of woodworking that remain treasured by his family today. His love for golden retrievers and the joys of nature often had him taking leisurely walks with his faithful dog, Moxie, or sitting outdoors on his veranda, enjoying the evening breeze and the enchanting hummingbirds at his feeder while smoking his beloved cigars. John had a knack for making people laugh and could be quite a character, often displaying a cantankerous side that, thankfully, was quickly followed by his warm-hearted nature. He was generous, energetic, and honest—a true friend and family man. He had a special way of finding joy in the simple pleasures of life, and whether he was making turkey soup, his favorite meatloaf, or playing guitar and harmonica with family, he did so with fervor. John leaves behind his daughter, Donna, his son, Paul (Flor), grandchildren Jessica Carstens (Jeff) and Dustin Dager (Dani), and great-grandchildren Mason, Cole, Miles, Wyatt, and Mia. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorraine, with whom he shared 30 incredible years. Also by his parents, Lester Stetson Dager and Frieda Holmes Dager, as well as his sister, Barbara Dager Mitchell. As we remember John, we’ll hold onto his spirit of enthusiasm and laughter. A ceremony to inter his ashes is scheduled for August 2026 in Schenectady, NY. Family and friends are reminded to be kind to those struggling with dementia or Alzheimer's, just as John would have wished. Rest easy, John; you will be missed but never forgotten.
