HERNG SHUAN LIN
02/04/1930- 10/8/2023
Mr. Herng Shuan Lin, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home in Meadows Place, Texas on Sunday, October 8, 2023 in the afternoon.
He was born into Japanese-occupied Taiwan in Nantou, Taiwan, one of 13 children. He was required to speak Taiwanese, Japanese, and Chinese mandarin growing up. He received a college degree in Economics from National Taiwan University then went to work for the First Commercial Bank of Taiwan where he met his wife. Mr. Lin rose through the ranks in the banking system into Director of Human Resources, to branch manager, to Vice President. He retired in the early 1980s and immigrated to the U.S. with the hope of bringing a better education and future to his two children. The family lived briefly in Pacific Grove, California where Mr. Lin invested in a motel business with one of his brothers, then subsequently moved to East Lansing, Michigan, where several of his wife’s family members resided. Mr. Lin’s wife is a gourmet chef, so they opened a bakery then turned it into a successful Chinese restaurant business -Sunrise Chinese Restaurant. Sunrise was their pride and joy as well as a labor of love for the couple for over a decade. They were featured in many newspapers, brought people from Detroit to enjoy their cuisine, and when they sold the business in 1997, the mayor of East Lansing presented the couple with a plaque commemorating their contribution to the City’s economy and culture. To the couple, it was the family they raised and the friendships they developed with their customers that meant the world to them.
Mr. Lin and his wife left Michigan for the Houston, Texas area in 1997 to retire and help their daughter Julia with her first child, Peter, their first grandchild. Julia and her husband Pierre gave them a second grandchild, Jonathan, in 2000, and the two grandchildren became Mr. Lin’s life. He and his wife participated in raising the two grandsons, attending all of their sporting events, school shows, youth orchestra performances, musicals and concerts, and the grandsons used to walk to their house after school until parents could get home from work.
In his spare time, Mr Lin enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing, sipping gourmet coffee, sampling sashimi, and hanging out with his family.
On Mr. Lin’s 90th birthday, he told his children that he had checked off everything on his bucket list: he’s traveled all over the world, in Europe and Asia and lived in many places; he’s been successful in his career and businesses; and he is most proud of his two children’s success and his grandchildren’s accomplishments. He is the last male of his siblings, and he has outlived all of his friends. His only wish was to go in peace and be at home. Therefore, we celebrate that his final wish has been granted and that his fulfilled life has been completed.
Mr. Lin is survived by his wife, Li-Hsiang Lin of 62 years of marriage, his daughter Julia Lin Jalbert, his son William Lin, son-in-law Pierre Jalbert, daughter-in-law Margie Vogel, grandsons Peter Wei Jalbert and Jonathan Jie Jalbert, granddaughter in-law Vaneza Tallman, and great grandchildren Norma Grace Jalbert, Cristian Wei Jalbert, and Julian Kent Jalbert.
