Mr. H. Gary Lunkenheimer, 82, of the Town of Amsterdam, died August 10, 2025 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam.
He was born March 30, 1943 in Gloversville, NY, son of Howard and Evelyn (Lawton) Lunkenheimer. He graduated from Gloversville High School and studied drafting at SUNY Canton, earning an associates degree. He worked as a surveyor and draftsman for Morrell Vrooman Engineers, playing a vital role in the safe planning of public infrastructure projects around the state. Thereafter he entered public service as the Director of Public Works in Gloversville for the remainder of his career. Gary was a firefighter for decades at the Pleasant Square Volunteer Fire Department, serving in numerous roles including former Chief and arson investigator, remaining a lifelong member of the board. He also volunteered his time as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 15 of the Boy Scouts of America and Friday’s Table soup kitchen in Gloversville for many years. On retirement, he served as the custodian to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gloversville, and later worked with the Betz, Rossi, Bellinger, and Stewart funeral homes. He was an active member of his church communities, a regular lector and member of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart. Most recently he was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Gary was a joyful and loving friend to all.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his caring wife of 56 years - Sandra Lee Lunkenheimer (Mathias).
Survivors include his four children - Amy Lynn Bronk (Robert) of the Town of Johnstown, Lori Ann Peck (Patrick) of Bridgeport, NY, Danielle Lee Loux (Paul) of Marlborough, MA, and Dr. Jared Ryan Lunkenheimer (Jenny Ajl) of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren – Ashley Bronk, Elizabeth Claus, Zachary Loux, and Payton Peck; two great grandchildren – Stella Young, Roland and Jameson Claus; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00 a.m.Friday, August 22nd at St. Stanislaus Church, 50 Cornell St, Amsterdam, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00a.m. with the Very Reverend O. Robert DeMartinis officiating. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville, NY.
