Florence Roberta Benton, 94, beloved wife and mother passed away January 23 at Pathways Hospital Ft. Collins CO.
Florence was born July 13, 1930 in Murray, Iowa to Faye and Eli Johnson. She attended Murray grade school where she had to walk uphill both ways. She graduated from Indianola (IA) High School.
In 1949, she moved to Greeley to attend Colorado State College (now UNC). She also worked as a telephone operator for Mountain Bell…one ringy dingy, two ringy dingy.
On February 18, 1951, Florence married Bill Benton at the First Christian Church in Greeley where her uncle, Rev, Clifford Cecil, was the minister. A son, Randy and daughter Sue were born of this marriage.
Just a few aspects of a life well lived include:
The last original member of the Worth While Workers Home Demonstration Club. She also volunteered at Weld County Hospital for a number of years.
Being the only girl with three brothers, she learned your tongue does freeze to the metal pipe in the Iowa winter.
Teaching Brownies how to embroidery left handed even if the Brownies weren't…Why cant these girls get this??
Saved a niece after the niece fell into the irrigation ditch.
Did beautiful cross stich work, bear collector, miniature dollhouse collector.
Was an excellent cook, enjoyed having holiday dinners and made the best peach pie!!
Loved going to Rockies games and watching them on t.v. Especially Todd and Charlie.
Really liked watching Gunsmoke
Florence and Bill enjoyed traveling: Hawaii, Alaska, fall colors in New England, Rose Bowl parade, Bronco trips, Rockies spring training camp and floating along the Mississippi on the river boat.
Florence is preceded in death by both parents, brothers Phillip Johnson, David Johnson, and brother and sister-in-law James Johnson and Phyllis Johnson.
Florence is survived by her husband of 73 years Bill, son Randy and partner Ray, daughter Sue, nieces Sheryl (Wayne) Larsen, Mary Kay Paul and nephews Bill (Lori) Benton and Mark (Patty) Johnson and their families, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers donation may be made to NOCO Humane or Pathways.
