Diane Werner

December 28, 1946 — November 2, 2025

Diane Arline Werner was born during a blizzard on December 28, 1946, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The youngest of three, she was affectionately known as “Durantee” — a nickname that suited her perfectly, full of humor and a touch of sass.

Diane grew up in Oregon, attending school in Grants Pass, Medford, and Ashland, where she graduated from Ashland High as a member of National Honor Society, a Pom Pom Girl, and President of Girls’ League. She later earned a degree in Secretarial Science from Southern Oregon College and went on to pursue her true calling in nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse in the mid-1970s.

Her career included positions with The Portland Clinic, the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, the American Red Cross, Providence, and as an inspector of surgical centers. Known for her intelligence, compassion, and dry humor, she cared deeply for her patients and colleagues alike.

Diane was also a proud and lifelong member of P.E.O., sharing in the same sisterhood that united generations of women in her family.

In 1983, she married Tom Werner, and together they made their home in Portland. One of the most meaningful moments of Diane’s life came in 1991, when she reunited with her daughter, Lori, whom she had placed for adoption at birth in 1970. Their bond grew strong and lasting, extending to granddaughter Emily—who affectionately renamed Diane “Pookin” as a young child—grandson Matthew, great-grandson Howard, and great-granddaughter Riley. Diane also remained connected to her stepson Jason (Christina) and his children, Sydney, Presley, and Jersey.

Diane loved her family, P.E.O. sisters, and reunions at Black Butte Ranch, where her sense of humor always shone through — especially in the family photos. She faced every challenge with courage and laughter and left behind a legacy of care, wit, and warmth.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; daughter, Lori; stepson, Jason (Christina); grandchildren, Emily, Matthew (Abby), Sydney, Presley, and Jersey; great-grandchildren, Howard, Riley, and Blair; brother, Bill (Judi); sister, Judy (Mike); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donations may be made in Diane’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Doctors Without Borders, two organizations close to her heart. To honor Diane’s legacy, please consider doing something kind for someone each day—just as she so often did.
