IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carlton Jay
Snell
October 24, 1947 – April 9, 2025
Carlton (Carl) Snell, age 77, of Johnstown, NY passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025.
Carl was born in Amsterdam, NY in 1947. He served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1972, where he served a tour in Vietnam. He later became a resident of the Town of Johnstown for many years.
He was predeceased by his long-term life partner, Janet Groves; his mother, OraMae; his brother, Donald Snell; and his sister, Eileen Snell. He is survived by his ex-wife, with whom he remained close; two sons, John Snell, Sr., and Calvin Snell; and a loving step-daughter, Mavis Stanley, who is the daughter of Janet Groves and who he treated as his own- so this well-blended family lost the term "step" many years ago. He leaves behind several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even two great, great grandchildren.
Carl worked very hard as a material handler over the years, first in the leather industry and then with cotton-blend products. He also served in the Berkshire Volunteer Fire Department in his early years, but his passion in his free time remained with farming, maintaining a vegetable garden, taking care of horses, and riding in an occasional rodeo (or falling off bulls as his real hobby, which was the family joke!). In his later years, Carl enjoyed fishing, going to the Fonda Speedway to watch dirt track racing, watching NASCAR races on TV, and spending time with his family, extended family, and friends. He lived a blessed life.
