Carlos Bonefont, 83, of Amsterdam, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at St Mary's Hospital.

Carlos was born on April 15, 1941, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to the late Gabriella Cosme. His family immigrated to the United States when he was two years old, establishing their residence in Brooklyn. He grew up in the city and attended local schooling, until he became a merchant seaman at 17 years old for Seafarers International. He held this job throughout his entire life until his retirement at 65 years old. He moved to Amsterdam in the late 1980's, where he put down his roots and raised his family.

He enjoyed singing, reading books, and being a jokester. More than anything, he loved his family and helping those around him. Carlos spent his whole life giving the shirt off his back to others and was always there to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his compassion and kindness.

Carlos was predeceased by his parents; his previous wives Luz Maria Bonefont and Hilda Bonefont; brothers Rafael and Lester Rivera; and nephew Lester Rivera Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife Wanda Bonefont; sons Carlos Bonefont Jr., Alex Bonefont, and Edwin Bonefont; stepchildren Ray Toro, Idalia Santiago, Robert Valentine, Alberto Valentine, and Hilda Rivera; grandchildren George (Sara) Santiago, Barbara Santiago, Felix Santiago, Jennifer Santiago, Shamil Bonefont, Michelle Bonefont, Alex Bonefont, Enid Marie Bonefont, Alexa Bonefont, Edwin Joel Bonefont, and Ayami Bonefont; greatgrandchild Eykel Zaed Perez Bonefont; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 6pm to 7pm at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010. A service of remembrance will be held at 7pm. Interment will take place the following day, Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 10:30am at St Michael Cemetery.
