February 19, 1934 – December 3, 2024
Bruce F. Mrha, age 90, of Johnstown passed away peacefully on December 3, 2024 at Nathan Littauer Hospital. Bruce was born in Buffalo, NY to the late Rudolph and Marguerite Mrha of Corfu, NY.
Bruce joined the United States Marine Corps in March of 1952. The first tour he served was in Korea, and his final tour was in Scotia, NY where he met his wife Jennie.
Bruce and Jennie were married in June of 1955. The couple were blessed with 4 wonderful sons, Mike (Carol), John (Dawn), Jim (Yvonne), Steve (Erin). Bruce was very proud of his nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Bruce worked for several local florists before buying Kilmer Florist in Johnstown. In 1963 Bruce built a new shop, which he called Colonial Flower Shoppe, which he ran for 44 years, retiring in 2006. Throughout his career, Bruce was very active in the Floral Industry. He served on the advisory board of Teleflora, and was Past President of the Capital District branch of Teleflora. He studied European Design in Holland, where he became a Master designer. In 1984 he received one of the highest awards in the Floral Industry - became AIFD American Institute of Floral Design, also AAR American Academy of Florists, served on Retail Council of Society American Florist, representing 5 states in Washington, DC. He attended several floral conventions throughout the United States and Europe. He was very proud when chosen to design at the World Flower Council in Mexico, and Sapporo, Japan, where he represented the United States. He loved the Floral Industry, and the people of Johnstown. He enjoyed decorating inside and out for Christmas, and his gardens.
Bruce had 2 siblings, the late David Mrha, and is survived by Paul (Joan) Mrha; as well as several nieces and nephews and cousins.
He loved his family and friends, and always greatly enjoyed gatherings and visits with his loved ones. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Toys for Tots, the Knights of Columbus, the Eagles, and the Moose Club. He was a faithful Eucharistic Minister, and was on the Parish Council at the Holy Trinity Church.
Bruce was truly blessed with wonderful family, friends, church family, floral friends, and faithful employees, Joe and Steve, and friends Don, Gary, Dick, Ed, Harry, and Carolyn and Frank, who were with the Mrhas from the start, and to all of their wonderful customers that made it all happen - God Bless you all.
Bruce's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Nathan Littauer Hospital for the wonderful care they provided to him. They would also like to thank nieces Chris and Lisa for always being there.
Relatives and friends are invited, and may call on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 4:00PM until 6:00PM at the Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, New York, 12078. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 10:00AM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 153 S. Main Street, Gloversville, NY 12078 with Father Francis R. Vivacqua and Father Matthew Wetsel concelebrating. Burial will take place at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery at a later date, to be announced. In support of the Floral Industry, please send flowers to a loved one, or a sick or lonely adult or child.
