Obituary for Juan Leonardo “Nayito” Hernandez Jr.
Juan Leonardo Hernandez Jr., affectionately known as “Nayito,” passed away on September 3, 2025, at the age of 50, at University Medical Center Main Campus in Tucson, Arizona.
He was born on February 26, 1975, in Bisbee, Arizona, to Juan Leonardo Hernandez III and Evelyn Hortense Bassham. Juan grew up in Tucson and graduated from Cholla High School. A skilled and hardworking welder, he dedicated more than 20 years to his craft, leaving his mark on the community through projects at Desert Diamond Casino, the University of Arizona campus, and several of Tucson’s skyscrapers.
Juan lived his life with strong faith, a big heart, and an unforgettable sense of humor. He loved reading his Bible, building things with his welder, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Family was everything to him, and his love for them shined in all he did. He was known for his jokes, often asking with a smile, “Are you a Mexican or a Mexican’t? It’s not a tuma!” His laughter, warmth, and presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
He is survived by his children: Juan Hernandez Jr., Israel Hernandez, Joshua Hernandez, Christopher Cordova, Sierra Hernandez, Francisco Hernandez, and Rosa Hernandez. He was a proud grandfather to Manny, Sophia, Jacelynn, Lliyana, Isaly, Jhovanny, Meilani, and Emiliano.
A family viewing will be held on September 19, 2025, at Desert Sunset Funeral Home at 3:00 PM with a memorial service to follow on September 26, 2025 at 2:00 PM. Followed by a family home get together at 3342 E Greenlee Rd

The family invites all who knew Juan to come together in celebrating his life. Juan’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and faith. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the honor of knowing him.
