John Stirling Hewitt
October 6, 1942 — December 29, 2024
John Stirling Hewitt was born to George Stirling Hewitt and Beatrice (Williams) Hewitt in Yakima, Washington on October 6, 1942. He grew up and lived in Juneau, Alaska Territory, until Alaska gained statehood in 1959, at which time the family transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah. John joined the Navy directly after graduating from East High School, and was soon sent to Viet Nam as a corpsman with the Marines. Upon leaving the service, he moved to Los Angeles, California. There he married Joanne Hendershot in 1968, and welcomed his son, Aaron Stirling Hewitt, in 1972. When the marriage with Joanne ended, John decided that Montana’s “big sky country” was a better place to raise his son. They lived in Billings until moving to Oregon where his mother and two younger sisters already resided. Portland is where he met and married the love of his life—Denna Zeiler Hewitt—and together they lived happily ever after for the rest of his life.
In addition to his wife and son, John is survived by his two sisters Megan (Lukens) and Patricia Hewitt, Denna’s son and daughter Scott and Stacy, and their growing families. Scott Reed and his wife Lisa are the proud parents of Hannah and Sophie. Stacy is mom to Jennifer and Brian, and grandmother to Dylan and Tyler. Brian is dad to Mason. All agree that John was a truly great grandfather!
