Elizabeth Louise Evans
July 20, 1933 — December 22, 2023
Elizabeth (or Betsy, as she was known to her friends) was born in Los Angeles on July 20, 1933, to George Thomas Evans and Rose Elizabeth Wheeler. She graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1951, then attended UCLA where she met her future husband David Randel. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in psychology, she taught grammar school for a few years while David attended medical school. She had four children: Tom was born in 1959, Rick in 1961, and the twins Brad and Bruce were born in 1962. In 1965 the family moved to Riverside, where Betsy raised her four children.
While her children were in high school, she decided to become a psychologist. She enrolled in graduate school at Cal State San Bernardino, where she earned a master’s degree in psychology. She interned for several years to accumulate enough hours of training to earn her MFCC (marital, family and child counseling) certificate and enter private practice. She practiced in Riverside for several years before moving to Berkeley with her second husband, Lowell Lewis, around 1981. She built a very successful practice in Berkeley and practiced for many years, eventually receiving a PhD in psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She built deep, lasting relationships with her clients, who valued her warmth, compassion, and empathy.
Everyone who knew Betsy was struck by her warm, bright personality, her sense of humor, and her compassion. She was a great listener and made the person she was talking to feel like they were the most important thing in the world at that moment.
She and Lowell loved living in their 1930s home in the hills of North Berkeley. They also bought a vacation home in Tahoe, where they spent many enjoyable weekends and family vacations. Betsy particularly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren Kai, Erina, and Sierra. After she retired, Betsy moved back to Southern California, where she spent her last years in the Laguna Woods area near her son Tom and daughter-in-law Wei.
She is remembered by her sons Tom, Rick, Brad, and Bruce, her daughters-in-law Wei, Kazuko, and Joy, and her grandchildren Kai, Erina, and Sierra. She will be missed but not forgotten. We love you Mom/Nana/Gram-sam!!!
