In Loving Memory of Alfonso Portillo
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfonso "Fonz" Portillo, a proud veteran of the Marines, devoted family member, and passionate sports fan, who left us on Saturday February 22, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Fonz was born on June 30, 1976 in Littlefield Texas to Manuela Sigala Portillo and Isabel Reynaldo Portillo.
Fonz was raised in Walsh and Lamar Colorado alongside his ten siblings. Fonz is a 1995 graduate of Lamar High School where he found his passion for sports. He was known for his athleticism competing as a wrestler and pole vaulter.
He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in 1995 and serving his country in the Gulf War, notably in Desert Storm. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Greeley Colorado and began his lifelong career as a Journeyman Electrician where he found his second family at Morning Fresh Dairy.
For those who knew Fonz, he was a lifelong supporter of the Denver Broncos, he rarely missed a game, always cheering with enthusiasm from his seat in front of the TV or from the stands at Mile High. His passion for sports extended to all Colorado teams, where he was a dedicated fan of the Avalanche, the Rockies, the CU Buffaloes and the DU Pioneers hockey team. Many cherished memories were made attending games, discussing plays, and celebrating victories with family and friends. When he wasn't supporting one of his sports teams at his favorite bar, the Dugout, Fonz could be found playing horse shoes, golfing, playing cornhole, darts, shooting clay pigeons or traveling the world.
Above all, Fonz cherished his family. He was a dedicated uncle to his many nephews and nieces, always taking time to be involved in their lives, offering encouragement and sharing his wisdom. He was continuously creating lasting memories, whether it was taking them bowling or wrestling with them. His love for his family was unwavering, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him.
Fonz is survived by his mother Manuela Portillo, his father Reynaldo Portillo, his three brothers, Arnoldo Portillo (Shawna), Felipe Portillo, Lucas Portillo (Lia), and seven sisters, Ermelinda Archibeque (C.J.), Gritelma Caton (Blu), Andrea Hudspeth (Anthony), Odilia Portillo, Elena Portillo (Angel), Lucrecia Portillo and Biatriz Peckler (John); numerous nephews; nieces and friends. He was proceeded in death by his brother-in-law Charles James "C.J." Archibeque.
In honor of Fonz's memory, the family requests that donations be made to The Wounded Warior Project https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/ in lieu of flowers. A celebration of life will be held on June 28, 2025. Location to be announced at a future date.
Rest in peace, Fonz. You will forever be missed and always remembered.
